About the Author
Khaled Anatolios (PhD, Boston College) is professor of theology at the University of Notre Dame. He previously taught in the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry. He is the author of Athanasius: The Coherence of His Thought and the Athanasius volume in Routledge's Early Church Fathers series. Anatolios was named a Henry Luce III Fellow in Theology for 2011-2012. I loved the book of Nero's life I have read all of Margaret George's books and have loved her writings.She has such a way of making her characters come to life.I defiantly give the book and writer a 5star rating

This book wasn’t nearly as good as her first novel about Nero. I found it a little repetitive and then it ended without truly addressing many of the rumors/beliefs about who Nero was.

This is book 2. Both were outstanding reads.

This is a lengthy novel about a man we mostly dismiss- and it's well worth your time. I remember little about Nero from school (and I'm not sure we actually were taught all that much) so this well researched book was both educational and entertaining for me. I missed the first book, which evidently covers up to this period, the last four years of his life. I regret not because I missed anything in this read but because George is a wonderful writer. She has humanized a man we know mostly as a megalomaniac. There are lessons we should learn from the politics of Rome. Thanks to Edelweiss for the ArC. Highly recommend for fans of historical fiction and/or those who would like to know more about Nero and Rome.

I am a huge fan of Margaret George. I have now read all but two of her books (one about Mary Magdalene and one about Mary Queen of Scots), and IMHO she's one of the best writers of historical fiction. I loved the first volume of her two-part novel about Nero, but the second volume doesn't quite do it for me. I'm honestly not sure why.There's a lot of good stuff, but there's a bit too much (for my taste) about building his dream palace, his need to be an actor/musician, and his LONG trip to Greece when he probably should have stayed home to prevent others from taking advantage of the power vacuum created by his absence. There's also a bit much about his romance with Poppaea and Acte. I think I'd have been more inclined to read more about the politics of the Roman empire.But Ms. George sure can spin a yarn, and I don't want anyone to think that the book is bad; it's a great read and she's still one of my faves.

I confess to knowing virtually nothing about Nero going into this novel – save a visual of him playing the fiddle while Rome burned. As usual, Margaret George brought me up to speed in a most entertaining way. Her historical fiction novel played out in the form of Nero’s autobiography with additional viewpoints from his first love, Acte, and Locusto, his poisons consultant. It’s a story of political plots and intrigue, living with rumors and innuendo, and never quite knowing who was worthy of Nero’s trust.I’ve read Margaret Georges’s previous novels about Cleopatra and Helen of Troy so I was unsurprised by the 500+ pages it took to tell Nero’s story. I also knew it would be meticulously researched and presented in her usual engaging style. The Afterword is very interesting. I think fans of the author and historical fiction will enjoy and learn from this story. I certainly did.

Passion takes precedence over politics, at least initially, in Margaret George’s brilliant follow-up novel to The Confessions of Young Nero. The story begins with the infamous fire that destroyed almost all of Rome, a fire Nero helps to put out. He helps dig out victims and console those who lost everything. However, the rumors then begin that Nero himself set the fires. He does nothing until he realizes that unless he finds a scapegoat his reign will end. And so the Christians become the easy targets because their teachings are used as evidence of their guilt.Nero after staging the massacre of the Christians for public viewing sets about rebuilding Rome. He intends to have Rome display glory and stunning, exotic views that will be admired forever! He attempts to wow his audience with his poetry, his athleticism in the chariot games, his artistic and architectural designs, and all of this (and more) are gorgeously depicted by the author. The effect on the reader is spellbinding. Not only is the history of Nero’s world explored but it also envelops the reader into the culture and beauty of the gods and former Roman and Greek emperors.Then deceit and tragedy enter Nero’s world, beginning with an absolutely huge defection on the part of both Senators and Nero’s own military guard. The plans for assassination are discovered and the plotters are condemned! But the moral and emotional devastation on Nero is piteous to follow. His pure intentions to create a beautiful cultured world within Rome are totally misconstrued and that shatters him. He will never trust again!The loss of his wife lead him to abandon Rome for a year while he travels to Greece where he will participate in the Olympics of the time. Guibert of Nogent (c. 1060-c. 1125) was a French monk who has emerged as one of the most original thinkers of the twelfth century.

Joseph McAlhany is an associate professor of great ideas and classics at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Jay Rubenstein, a MacArthur Fellow and Rhodes scholar, is an assistant professor of medieval history at the University of Tennessee- Knoxville and the author of the first comprehensive study of Guibert's life and thought in over a century.
