I read all the reviews, looked at the sampler and decided to buy it on kindle, only a little cheaper than print this time. I wanted some blocks that were eye catching a simple that played tribute to the cloth and colour. Some of the reviews talked both about the sameness of the blocks and the fact of the fabric from the Tula pink collection, I for one really hated the fabric and would not have brought it, it was about the colours. ( although I did love the frog centre, cute). As for the sameness of the blocks I felt it pulled the quilt together without making all the blocks exact, how many of us have made the old style sample quilts that just don't hang together, even with all our care in colour. And speaking of colour the last couple of pages about the three full quilts to make just made the colour theory click with me so simple yet some many books written about it that just didn't get through my skull. I guess the book isn't for everyone, as with all books depends on your expectations.

I purchased this book for an Instagram challenge to sew through all 100 blocks in 100 days. The diagrams are very easy to follow (how to sew each block). If I didn't have the accountability of the challenge, I probably would've just given up 30 blocks into this book. It's not that the blocks were hard to sew - but rather just SO MANY TINY PIECES that it got to be overwhelming. However, I pushed through and my quilt top is almost done. It's stunning!!If you're thinking about buying this book to make the 100 blocks, here are a couple of my recommendations:1. Work at it with a group of people or during a challenge (blog or Instagram) for accountability. Or give yourself a day limit to complete it. It's very easy to lose motivation every 15 or so blocks.2. Deciding what fabric to use for what block and then cutting the fabric was consistently the most time consuming for me. It was helpful for me to cut a set of five or ten blocks at one time, and put the little pieces in a zip lock bag until I sewed the corresponding block.3. Have one designated day for cutting pieces and another day when you can just sew blocks.4. Work with fabrics you absolutely LOVE! This helps with the monotony of making 100 blocks of tiny pieces.5. Don't worry about getting your seams lined up perfectly. It will make it way too stressful of a project.6. Lay all your finished blocks together every once in a while to gaze at how fun they look all together!!!

Sometimes it's nice to be able to sit down and use up a few, or even a bunch of scraps in a creative way without investing too much time or thought to the process. To just relax and have fun, but still have something interesting to show for it. Likewise, sometimes it's nice to take a break from the tedium of making traditional quilt blocks and experiment with something just a bit different. For me, that's what this book offers. Tula's taken simple shapes, like crosses and triangles, and said, "O.K....what if we make it this way next? And now this way. And what about this way?" The blocks are super simple, but they can get you out of the scrap rut and get the creative juices flowing. Each block ends up 6.5 inches, so you don't have the fear of investing a lot of fabric only to end up with user remorse. The blocks can be left as is or can be embellished to your heart's content. The book offers some really nice ways to set the blocks to make interesting quilts, and, as a free- motion quilter, I love the fact that the pictures of each block also details the way it's been quilted. The blocks would be perfect for placemats or other projects if you don't want to make a quilt. Unlike a few of the other reviewers, I am not familiar with any of Tula Pink's other books, nor would I know one of her fabrics from anyone else's. I simply have a daunting amount of scraps but don't want to commit to a "Dear Jane" or other time consuming or repetitive project, technique, or method to use some of them up. This book offered the perfect solution!UPDATE: I've decided to work through this book in the order that the blocks are presented. So far I have made twelve of the blocks and have truly enjoyed the process! Instructions for each block tell you how many different fabrics you need and what to cut from each one, which makes it easy to work from my scrap stash. Assembly instructions are well diagrammed so that the blocks are easy enough for beginners, and I've loved the fact that Tula designed the blocks so that there are very few seams to match up. The only problem I've encountered with the book is that making the blocks is addictive...they are so quick to make it is hard to stop after making just one, and it's very satisfying to be using up my scraps by turning them into awesome blocks. A GREAT BOOK!!!!! If I could give it ten stars I would! (UPDATE: As of June 2018 I AM NOW ON THE 65th BLOCK. Still having FUN...would make more progress if I had fewer other quiltingobligations and also if my husband hadn't taken up a hobby that now has him constantly using my sewing room's cutting table.)

When I read the reviews of this book, I was surprised that someone was going through it and making every single block.But after thinking about it, that is exactly what I am going to do, even though I have an aversion to making six inch blocks.But these blocks are so refreshing in their approach, so truly interesting in their color combinations that I am going to dig into my enormous bin of scraps and try to make a block a day. Someone hold me to this, please!Another thing that I like is that Tula shows several diagrams and photos as to how these blocks can be combined and placed in a quilt.Obviously it is a very big quilt, but my original plan was to double the size of these blocks - I still may do that.Tula's enthusiasm and vitality are so clearly apparent in these blocks. The approach is refreshing and approachable for those tired of doing the same old traditional blocks.

I love making these blocks, they are simple, fun and you can add your own touch in there with the fabrics. I have found numerous errors in the size of the blocks in the instructions and the number that you are to cut. I find this very frustrating and I have given up for awhile on finishing the rest of the blocks. I don't have the time nor the fabric to redo a block twice because of incorrect cutting instructions. I have about half of the blocks done so far.

The learning experience is just what the quilt dr ordered. It's nice seeing everyone blocks and their fabric choice. Make sure you join with a group of others.

Maimonides, one of the preeminent personalities of medieval Jewish history, was a jurist, philosopher, expert in Jewish law, physician at the court of Saladin and a respected and dedicated communal leader. Given all that, it's difficult to understand the decision to present Maimonides's legacy primarily through the lens of his work as a physician. The 12th century was a time of stagnation in the history of medicine, and the author himself concedes that Maimonides contributed very little that was new or innovative to the field. By contrast, his jurisprudential magnum opus, the Mishne Torah, constituted a groundbreaking work in its own day and continues to be authoritative almost a millennium later. Although Nuland acknowledges this in a chapter on Maimonides's religious scholarship, it is dwarfed by the overarching concern with medicine—which seems the primary interest of Nuland, a clinical professor of surgery at Yale. The author does a serviceable job of stitching together this slight, popular biography of the larger-than-life Maimonides, but his writing is marred by an overwrought prologue and some glib generalizations. Like disproportionately many Jewish sons, Maimonides became a doctor in obedience, Nuland thinks, to the Lord's injunction to his people to choose life. In chapters centered on Maimonides' travels, three great books, and medical papers, Nuland argues that that obedience shows in more than Maimonides' medical career. Maimonides was devoted to sustaining the Jews as a people, and out of that, to human life generally. If he was otherwise a physician of his time, bound by the authority of Hippocrates and Galen, he believed that reason and observation should also inform prescription. The best book on investing by the little guy's friend - John Bogle. You can make a sound financial plan using this book and some common sense investing. John is the best at breaking down the mutual fund industry and telling you how they load up funds with commissions and make you pay those ridiculous high fees in a low profile hard to spot way. He makes it easy for you to spot the charges in their language of 12b-1 and advertising fees. If you are using a broker - you owe it to yourself to read this book and study the facts on broker kickbacks, sales trips, and how the industry really works at your expense. You will be shocked at their hiding of fees and charges. John smokes them out and teaches you how to spot them deep in the wall of paper work.

Before digging into the book itself, it is important to recognize the work of John C. Bogle in the financial services industry. As briefly highlighted in the book, Bogle started the Vanguard investment fund to test a thesis put out by a prominent researcher on the merits of "indexing". He created the fund on the idea that investors shouldn't have to pay exorbitant management fees or transaction fees when putting their money away in a fund. The work he has done cannot be matched, and the 500+ pages of this book prove it page after page.That said, I cannot give this book a 5 star rating because in my eyes, it spends far too long discussing a far too simple premise. The premise is straightforward and can be gleamed from the first few pages of reading."On average, investors would be better off to invest in an large cap index fund like the S&P 500 for the long term than any other investment strategy".If you are convinced of this line of reasoning already, this book may not be worth reading cover to cover. Bogle does state near the beginning of the book, "My goal has been to make each chapter a freestanding and indepedent essay on a particular issue". In my opinion, this book is an essential "manual" for personal investment strategy, but does not suffice for a casual weekend read. The text ruminates on the topic of mutual funds to the point where the read feels like the logical arguments are going in circles. Bogle does argue his points well though and backs them up with large amounts of historical data while also injecting his personal wisdom every so often (the true gem of the book).As a millenial who has taken the personal computer revolution for granted, it is tough to appreciate the weight of this book. U.S. mutual funds now hold over $2.5 T of U.S. equity securities compared to the $40 B in 1982, and even more startling, the concept of "indexing" is actually a novel idea still. It was hard for me to grasp the innovation of indexing because I have always found it to be an obvious idea. The 600+ pages cover everything from basic definitions to strategies for investment to include several levels of the economics and math that go with it.On of my favorite things about this booko is that Bogle does not pull any punches. This is not a get rich quick view of funds. It is a treatise and a lifetime of experience condensed down into a readable book.While you can read the book cover to cover, I recommend using it as a reference where you read the book in the sections as you need them.

People say that investing is complex and confusing and that you need to hire a financial advisor to help you on investing your money for a comfortable retirement. After reading this book, I found that much of what you hear from the financial industry is wrong and is designed to confuse the retail investor. The truth of the matter is that investing your money is not complex and that you do not need a financial advisor. If you listen and follow the advise from much of the professional investor class about where you should put your money, you would be making them rich at the expense of your savings. John Bogle is doing us retail investor's much needed truth about how to manage your money and has the roadmap and proof to tell us, what most others in the industry has long kept silent and a secret. The truth to investing is that it is not secret, do it yourself, it is not complex, and don't listen to the advise of professional portfolio managers who are out to take your money while pretending to have your back, they don't because it is at their expense. Go with Bogle's folly, read the book, and follow the wisdom in it, and you will do better than 96% of all funds managed by the portfolio managers.

it's a good book. It's very detailed. However I don't think its a must read for a DIY investor. The basic premises on the book are covered in other investment books. I think the book is more appropriate for people with a career in investment, business and/or accounting. The most interesting part for me was the least useful, which is the story of the beginnings of Vanguard.
