About the Author

D. Soyini Madison is professor of Performance Studies and Anthropology, and served as Interim Director of the Program in African Studies at Northwestern University. She is the author of Acts of Activism: Human Rights as Radical Performance (2010, Cambridge UP) and the co-editor with Judith Hamera of the SAGE Handbook of Performance Studies (2006, SAGE). Madison lived in West Africa as a Senior Fulbright Scholar and has conducted field research over the past ten years on the performance tactics of local human rights activists in Ghana.

This is a foundational text and greatly needed in a range of academic, artistic, and professional fields, especially for those conducting research and engaged with communities they are either new to an/or intimately connected with. Highly recommended.

Let us face it: books on academic subjects can be a tedious read, but Madison writes with a passion for critical ethnography that makes the reader understand the relevance of this very important methodology.Her case studies provide a context for why critical ethnography is an important research methodology for many of the social science disciplines. She also provides great sidebars on important historical events that helped shape critical ethnography.

It has some complicated information, not easy to read for non-native speakers.

Good research material.

Wow, this may be one of the most unreadable books I have ever read. The shift to Critical Ethnography in some journalism departments is a bad direction in my mind. What ever happened to the: Who What When Where and How?

All of Madison’s texts are rich treasure troves of scholarly brilliance, practical wisdom, and something even rarer, a spirit of generosity and meticulousness that comes from caring deeply about her work and others.Miraculously this book dishes out critical theory and serves it up in bite-sized pieces any undergraduate or graduate student can digest. I have used this book in my undergraduate classes as the foundational text for Performance Ethnography. Students time and again tell me how accessible and meaningful Madison’s text makes theory for them through clear definitions and concrete case studies and examples that demonstrate how to think about theory and performance together when engaged in fieldwork.This book also focuses on one’s own positionality and the importance of addressing and confronting one’s own identity when engaging with others in a “co-performance” while doing fieldwork. If covers a range of other topics of vital concern and interest to the novice as well as the seasoned critical ethnographer, such as methodology, interviews, ethics, freeing writer’s block, performative writing, and much, much more. Anyone teaching or learning about critical ethnography who is engaged with other people through fieldwork should read this book!!!

D. Soyini Madison's "Critical Ethnography: Method, Ethics, and Performance" is a rich and accessible resource for scholars and students engaged in ethnographic fieldwork. It provides a concise primer in the theoretical, methodological, ethical, and performative dimensions of field research, and maintains a very pragmatic, "how-to" approach that might be especially valuable to younger scholars or those doing ethnographic work for the first time. The goals of the book are explicitly pedagogical, and to this end Madison organizes it around three fictional case studies which she relates to the tripartite divisions of method/theory, ethics, and performance that structure the work. Madison's recapitulations of important theories in anthropology, gender studies, performance studies, postcolonial studies and related fields are particularly deft and approachable for those of us who sometimes need a little help keeping our "dasein" straight from our interpellation, our Merleau-Ponty from our Heidegger. Throughout the book, Madison seems particularly indebted to the work of the late Dwight Conquergood, whose ideas on the intersections of performance, ethnography, and ethics are quite prominent and inform many of her positions. All in all, the book is a treasure trove of sound, practical advice from a seasoned ethnographer on topics ranging from how to deal with writer's block, to how to conduct an interview, to how to think about ethical obligations to your informants, as well as many other concerns that often arise in the context of doing and writing about fieldwork.

As a documentary filmmaker this text was really helpful to me when working with my sources and talents. It was suggested to me by a friend when critiquing my new work. After reading it I was able to place myself in an increasingly thoughtful and thorough position when working with my interviewees. I would suggest every visual artist interested in exploring ethnicity or identity through appropriations should check out the ethics section!
