About the Author

Kenneth J. Collins is Professor of Historical Theology and Wesley Studies at Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore Kentucky, and an elder in the Kentucky Conference of The United Methodist Church. This book is a thorough and well-written summary of Wesley's theological journey. I knew very little about Wesley's thought, life, and theological ideas going in, and now I feel like I have a good grasp on the man and his beliefs and where he stands in the Christian theological tradition. Collins mostly writes the book in a chronological style so you can see the advancement of Wesley's ideas over time. Some views are revised, some are restated, others are amplified. The book uses letters, journals, and sermons of Wesley liberally as well as letters or statements by others about him. I do not agree with some of Wesley's doctrines - I won't go into that here - and was angered at the man at times for these differences, but as I read, I grew in admiration of his fervent mind, his passion for righteousness, and his incredible work rate over 60 years of ministry! Because it is thorough, the book can seem a bit repetitive at times. There are lots of additional comments in footnotes, so as a result, if you fully dive in, it can be a long read (270 pages main body + 50+ pages of footnotes. But if you are interested in the man and how he linked up Protestant Reformation developments with the "holiness" movement of Pentecostalism and other charismatic spin-offs, this really is a great read.

It really helped me to better understand the destination from whence AME Zion was birthed and how Wesley shaped the rise of Christianity through his own struggles! It also reveals the importance of not just talking the talk, but walking it, and Wesley's compassion and zeal for the Word of God is both exhilarating and resourceful. I learned that no matter the obstacles, perseverance will cause one to prevail, but recognizing we cannot fight this battle alone. Unity is vital to succeed in spreading the gospel to all people.

This book by Collins is an approach that I have not read before. He took the history of John Wesley and plugged in the theological insights and problems that Wesley was wrestling with at that period of time. It is a very helpful and inciteful book. Wish I had written it, but the historical is beyond me. The combination of historical insight and theological insight is rare and Collins has found a way to present it that is also readable and helpful. Good job!J. About the Author
Dr Kendrick graduated from medical school in Aberdeen and trained as a General Practitioner in Scotland. After ten years he split his time between General Practice and education. On the doctor side, Malcolm currently lives and works in Cheshire in General Practice, Intermediate Care and Out of Hours. On the education side, Malcolm set up the on- line educational system for the European Society of Cardiology, working with the European Commission and also set up the first website for the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) in the UK. Malcolm is an original member of the Centre for Evidence Based Medicine in Oxford and of The International Network of Cholesterol Sceptics (THINCS). The latter comprises a group of scientists, doctors and researchers who share the belief that cholesterol does not cause cardiovascular disease. This is the field of medicine for which Malcolm is best known. His long term interest in the epidemiology of cardiovascular disease has re- sulted in many publications in journals such as the BMJ, Medical Hypoth- eses, Pulse and PharmacoEconomics. His breadth and depth of expertise in this area led to his election to Who’s Who in 2009. The Brotherhood's most legendary contribution to the drug scene was homemade: Orange Sunshine, the group's nickname for their trademark orange-colored acid tablet that happened to produce an especially powerful trip. Brotherhood foot soldiers passed out handfuls of the tablets to communes, at Grateful Dead concerts, and at love-ins up and down the coast of California and beyond. The Hell's Angels, Charles Mason and his followers, and the unruly crowd at the infamous Altamont music festival all tripped out on this acid. Jimi Hendrix even appeared in a film starring Brotherhood members and performed a private show for the fugitive band of outlaws on the slope of a Hawaiian volcano.

The Brotherhood of Eternal Love was a group of 1960s hippie visionaries with a plan. Heidi Siegmund Cuda is an Emmy Award winning producer and the author of The Ice Opinion with Ice T, the first book of rap. She also wrote Got Your Back with Tupac’s bodyguard Frank Alexander; Sublime’s Brad Nowell: Crazy Fool (Portrait of a Punk); and Warped Book: Tales of Freedom and Psychotic Ambition, about the Vans Warped Tour. Cuda is a former investigative producer for Fox 11 News and former music critic and columnist for the Los Angeles Times. She now writes screenplays.

D. Soyini Madison is professor of Performance Studies and Anthropology, and served as Interim Director of the Program in African Studies at Northwestern University. She is the author of Acts of Activism: Human Rights as Radical Performance (2010, Cambridge UP) and the co-editor with Judith Hamera of the SAGE Handbook of Performance Studies (2006, SAGE). Madison lived in West Africa as a Senior Fulbright Scholar and has conducted field research over the past ten years on the performance tactics of local human rights activists in Ghana.

This is a foundational text and greatly needed in a range of academic, artistic, and professional fields, especially for those conducting research and engaged with communities they are either new to an/or intimately connected with. Highly recommended.

Let us face it: books on academic subjects can be a tedious read, but Madison writes with a passion for critical ethnography that makes the reader understand the relevance of this very important methodology.Her case studies provide a context for why critical ethnography is an important research methodology for many of the social science disciplines. She also provides great sidebars on important historical events that helped shape critical ethnography.

It has some complicated information, not easy to read for non-native speakers.

Wow, this may be one of the most unreadable books I have ever read. The shift to Critical Ethnography in some journalism departments is a bad direction in my mind. What ever happened to the: Who What When Where and How?

All of Madison’s texts are rich treasure troves of scholarly brilliance, practical wisdom, and something even rarer, a spirit of generosity and meticulousness that comes from caring deeply about her work and others.Miraculously this book dishes out critical theory and serves it up in bite-sized pieces any undergraduate or graduate student can digest. I have used this book in my undergraduate classes as the foundational text for Performance Ethnography. Students time and again tell me how accessible and meaningful Madison’s text makes theory for them through clear definitions and concrete case studies and examples that demonstrate how to think about theory and performance together when engaged in fieldwork.This book also focuses on one’s own positionality and the importance of addressing and confronting one’s own identity when engaging with others in a “co-performance” while doing fieldwork. If covers a range of other topics of vital concern and interest to the novice as well as the seasoned critical ethnographer, such as methodology, interviews, ethics, freeing writer’s block, performative writing, and much, much more. Anyone teaching or learning about critical ethnography who is engaged with other people through fieldwork should read this book!!!

D. Soyini Madison's "Critical Ethnography: Method, Ethics, and Performance" is a rich and accessible resource for scholars and students engaged in ethnographic fieldwork. It provides a concise primer in the theoretical, methodological, ethical, and performative dimensions of field research, and maintains a very pragmatic, "how-to" approach that might be especially valuable to younger scholars or those doing ethnographic work for the first time. The goals of the book are explicitly pedagogical, and to this end Madison organizes it around three fictional case studies which she relates to the tripartite divisions of method/theory, ethics, and performance that structure the work. Madison's recapitulations of important theories in anthropology, gender studies, performance studies, postcolonial studies and related fields are particularly deft and approachable for those of us who sometimes need a little help keeping our "dasein" straight from our interpellation, our Merleau-Ponty from our Heidegger. Throughout the book, Madison seems particularly indebted to the work of the late Dwight Conquergood, whose ideas on the intersections of performance, ethnography, and ethics are quite prominent and inform many of her positions. All in all, the book is a treasure trove of sound, practical advice from a seasoned ethnographer on topics ranging from how to deal with writer's block, to how to conduct an interview, to how to think about ethical obligations to your informants, as well as many other concerns that often arise in the context of doing and writing about fieldwork.

As a documentary filmmaker this text was really helpful to me when working with my sources and talents. It was suggested to me by a friend when critiquing my new work. After reading it I was able to place myself in an increasingly thoughtful and thorough position when working with my interviewees. I would suggest every visual artist interested in exploring ethnicity or identity through appropriations should check out the ethics section!
